Fairytales Really Need To Be Updated- Shrek the Musical!

unnamed-1The 7th grade musical is one of the great traditions of Ascension. In the past, the 7th grade students have put on wonderful shows such as Guys and Dolls, High School Musical, Seussical, and My Son Pinocchio. And this year’s show may be the best one yet…

Shrek!

That’s right! The 7th graders are bringing to life the movie we all watched countless times growing up.

Shrek the Musical, Jr. is true to the movie as Lord Farquad (Elliot Lynd) banishes all of the fairytale creatures to Shrek’s swamp to preserve his perfect kingdom. Shrek (Luke Leblanc) and his sidekick Donkey (Ashton Young) strike a deal to save the Princess Fiona (Meghan Colomb) in return for the swamp.

I had the opportunity to sit in on one of their rehearsals and even without sets and costumes, the show looked amazing. The directors, Ms. McDonald and Mr. Hall have outdone themselves. Mr. Hall said, “We’re very excited. These kids have worked so hard and have had so much enthusiasm at every rehearsal. I’m very proud of each and every one of them. I have seen a lot of growth and I promise an exciting show!”

A different take on fairytales, the show is filled with all of your favorite characters from the movie, fun music from the Broadway show, incredible dance numbers, and an inspiring message of just being yourself.

Ashton Young said it best when he told me, ‘That it is the best play by 7th graders they’ve seen yet.”

So let your freak flag fly and come out Wednesday, November 18th, at 7:00 P.M to see these incredible kids bring Shrek to life.
