Emmie Gage knew she was going to have a unique experience on the tennis team last spring. Her coach was frequently late and disorganized causing the team to basically fend for themselves. This responsibility made the team stronger and more independent. What seemed to be a prevention to success actually gave the team more dedication to win. Emmie Gage and Ascension alum Sophia Boatright fought together to achieve first seed in the tournament. When this was achieved, they eventually won regionals. Emmie is proud to say that she won the individual doubles title, along with the much coveted team title. After winning regionals and putting in the time for success, the team all agreed that this was their time to win state. They were successful in this goal, and Emmie described the experience by saying, “I cried. Whenever the opponent missed the ball, Sophia and I melted because her grandma had died the day before state and we both knew we were doing it for her.” The experience was unforgettable. Even though the coach was not ideal (he even skipped state), the team pulled through and became stronger as individuals and as a group.
