On Tuesday 23rd January, Mrs. Rachel Futch’s Honors Anatomy and Physiology class went on a field trip to the Our Lady of Lourdes Hospital in Lafayette. Students arrived bright and early at 7.45am and were welcomed with breakfast sandwiches along with the beverage choice of hot coffee or juice. The students were split into two groups, by class period, one group with Mrs.Becnel and one group with Mrs.Futch. Both groups took turns between touring the hospital and visiting the OR rooms to view surgeries live in action through the glass doors. Students got to dress out in scrubs, hairnets, and masks before entering the supply and operating room corridor where both groups had the opportunity to watch open heart surgery take place.(PSA: it really does look a lot like Grey’s Anatomy)
Our group in particular got to see an extracted cardiac aortic valve and the artificial valve that would be replacing it in the heart. Our group also took turns entering tumor extraction surgery where we talked to the surgeon as well as saw a liver inside a body and an extracted gallbladder. We also saw an orthopedic neurosurgery take place. Finally, we ended the day back in the conference room with lunch sandwiches and wrapped up the day with a series of sessions with an ER director and burn unit surgeon. They shared some incredibles stories and we even learned about emotional agility. We are extremely grateful to Mrs Futch for this informational and eye-opening experience and opportunity as for most seniors on this trip, including myself it solidified our interest in the healthcare field and for some confirmed their disinterest.
