Tech-NO

Tech-NO

On March 8th, Ascension Episcopal School experienced its first tech-free day. That meant no laptops, Ipads, phones, or any other modern device. This resulted in students having to take notes by hand and doing everything like people did before technology. To ensure no students would be on their phones, there was a “Device Daycare” located in the library where each student would put their phone in for the day.

As was predicted, AAA was the hardest period for people to be tech-free in. According to sophomore Claire Walters, the hardest part was not being able to listen to any music in all of her classes, especially AAA. Instead, she played board games in the library that were set out by Mrs. Delcambre and the prefects. Others believed that the hardest part was the time of year in which it occurred. This week is the quarter close and many teachers assign work and tests due at the end of the week, all which require technology to either complete or access the notes. Junior Sydney Smith stated that “it was hard to study for her class when the entire curriculum is centered around technology.”

Overall, tech-free day was a chance for students to unplug and pass time the way our parents most likely did — playing board games and actually talking to one another. As of now, it seems that Ascension is planning to make this an annual recurrence. They intend to improve it by changing the time of year it occurs and adding other fun things for students to look forward to. Below is the video created my Mrs. Delcambre introducing tech-free day.
