At this point in the season, the girls’ soccer team here at Ascension has an impressive record of 9-3-1 and 3-0 in District games as the season is wrapping up. The current seniors were freshmen when their coach, Miles Guy, took up the job at Ascension, so they are the first players he has seen all the way through their high school soccer career. Because of this, this year’s soccer season has been a reflection of how far the current team has come and how far it will go.
A few years ago, the team would have been thrilled with playing a heavily defensive game that would just prevent them from getting mercy-ruled. However, this year, it has been opposing teams playing that way instead, and our girls are expected to win most of their games. The development of the girls’ team is due to how the upperclassmen have grown and how our talented underclassmen will continue to grow and not be afraid to ask their upperclassmen for help if they need it. One of the best things about the team is the community being very close-knit, and everyone gets along well, whether it is on or off the field.
After starting this season with a loss to NISH, the team has put its foot on the gas and refused to let up. This includes winning big games such as beating ESA for the first time in years with a score of 4-1, and beating Sulphur in a challenging game that resulted in a 1-0 victory. The girls have never stopped playing to the best of their ability, despite all of the hard falls, leg cramps, and injuries.
With an emotional departure for the senior girls creeping up, the girls are working incredibly to continue to give their all as they conclude the season. In the wise words of Coach Brian Martinez, “Set the tone.”
