From a Germaphobe to You: WASH YOUR HANDS

From a Germaphobe to You: WASH YOUR HANDS

Dear ladies,

I would like to preface this by saying that I truly care about you all dearly and this is in no way supposed to call anyone out. This is simply intended for the betterment of the school, and my sanity, as a whole.

With that being said, I have noticed a trend happening amongst the Blue Gator ladies and let me just say, I am disgusted. Whilst washing my hands, minding my own business, I cannot help but notice when someone exits a stall and walks right past me to the door, bypassing the readily available sinks practically begging you to wash your hands. I wish I could say it was only a blip; that hey, a couple of people’s mistakes do not represent the majority. But NO. This is not the case. It seems that this trend of not washing one’s hands before exiting the bathroom has turned into a sort of virus, infecting our lovely school by storm causing an epidemic.

As an Ascension student, you have probably either experienced, or at least heard of, the infamous Ascension Plague. At least once a year, sickness affects the vast majority of both the faculty and students. I am going to go out on a limb here and say that perhaps not washing one’s hands could perhaps contribute to the spreading of these germs.

In order to get an expert opinion on the subject, I spoke with our very own school nurse, Mrs. Beth Acevedo. She told me a very insightful story I would like to share with you all: “Years ago, I was on a date with a guy…he came out of the bathroom and pointed to a guy holding his girlfriend’s hand and told me he didn’t wash his hands and I was like *gag*.” Gag is correct Mrs. Acevedo; that is disgusting. She also very generously gave some tips and instructions on the proper way to wash one’s hands since this seems to have been lost in translation at some point. She says that each time you wash your hands, you should “sing to yourself ‘Happy Birthday’ and scrub vigorously.” So there you go, it’s as simple as that.

I understand some may be opting out of the traditional soap and water to use hand sanitizer. Although this is much better than not washing one’s hands at all, consider what you touch before that. As Mrs. Acevedo says, “Everything you touch has germs so you continually spread germs if your hands are not washed.”

I want to leave you with a quote that Mr. Plunk says his mother used to tell him: “Cleanliness is next to Godliness.” Ladies, let us make a pact right now to wash our hands.

Sincerely disgusted,

Your friendly neighborhood germaphobe, and friend, Alyssa Wilson
